Avia Shemesh writes her PhD thesis in the art history department under the supervision of Dr. Sarit Shalev-Eini, studying the musical depictions in Romanesque sculpture on the Pilgrimage routes of Santiago de Compostela. The research focuses on the musical depictions included in sculptural program surrounding church buildings and cathedrals during the Romanesque and Gothic period. These programs incorporated both sacred and secular images, with the musical images playing a role in both. These musical images help define the relationship between music and visual art as well as the secular and liturgical spaces of the period.
